On Saturday the 2nd of February a small but energetic group of Hillcrest conservancy members with their gardeners gathered at Springside Nature Reserve to undertake some much needed maintenance.
The entrance gate and all the signage which had been covered in moss was given a thorough cleaning.
More importantly a start was made on eliminating the wild ginger Hedychium spp from the reserve. Over the years ginger has escaped from adjacent properties into the reserve and is now threatening the indigenous flora and with it the fauna, due to habitat change..
Two thousand square meters (no mean feat) of this alien invader was treated but much work remains.
The first Saturday of every month has been set aside for neighbours to donate a few hours of their time in the morning. Bring along your gardener as well, to assist in trying to save this natural asset right in the heart of Hillcrest.
At the end of the morning join together at the Kingfisher Centre for a well deserved cup of tea.
